Frequently Asked Questions

  • This workshop is open to beginners, professionals, and everything in between. The only criteria are that you have an interest in (learning) photography and have the motivation to be on the go every day.

  • Short answer: yes. Even if you’re a total beginner, we do recommend you bring a camera. If you have no interest in exploring photography, this might not be the trip for you. There are many other safaris out there that could be better suited to your wishes. We also don’t recommend relying solely on an iPhone (or similar). See next question for what we recommend to bring along.

  • We suggest bringing at minimum a DSLR/Mirrorless body (2 bodies would be best) and at least a 70-200mm telephoto lens, a wide-angle (i.e. 16-35mm or 24-70mm), extra batteries, and a tripod.

If you have access to a super-telephoto lens, bring it for sure, but we’ll have the ability to get quite close to the wildlife and a 500mm definitely is NOT a requirement to capture amazing shots. Sigma & Tamron both make a great 150-500 (or similar) that is affordable.

If you’re a beginner and you do not own your own gear, we suggest looking into rental options. Depending on your location, we can suggest a rental company.

  • This depends on where you’re going. Generally it’s not allowed to fly drones inside National Parks without a permit and this means your opportunities to fly it in Zimbabwe or Borneo will be limited. For Kenya it’s even more restricted as it’s very difficult to even bring a drone into the country.

All-in-all, we recommend focusing on ground-level photography as this is where the best encounters will take place.

  • This depends on your own passport and your destination. It’s crucial that you check with your embassy in order to confirm if you need to apply for a visa ahead of time or if you are exempted.

  • Yes. Charging points and electricity are available throughout our stay at all our accommodations.

  • Yes, generally there’s wifi at most of our accommodations for essential communication, but it’s not the most reliable.

In Borneo however, there is no wifi available throughout our stay on the boat.

Either way, we suggest switching off and enjoying a little internet detox.

  • Kenya: Nairobi (NBO)
    Borneo: Pangkalan Bun (PKN)
    Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls (VFA)

  • African destinations: Dry and warm! Bring a sweater/jacket just in the case, the early mornings on the game drive vehicle can be chilly, but it warms up nicely during the day.

Borneo: Humid and warm! Bring light layers and plenty of mosquito spray.

Packing lists are provided for each expedition in the pre-departure briefing.
